Bait and Scent Options for Super Baits and Killer-Fish
Recently we have been having a lot of questions about different bait options with both Killer-Fish and Super Baits. This is something that can vary greatly from angler to angler based off of personal preferences and the region in which you are fishing. With all of the different scent and bait options flooding the market, the decision on what to use has become more and more difficult. Tuna, sardine, herring, anchovy, prawn, and squid are all legitimate options for filling your Super Baits or wrapping your Killer-Fish. With that being said, we primarily like to stick with two bait options that we will then alter in to several different options. We have narrowed our use down to strictly Tuna (oil packed in the can, not tuna bellies) and sardine fillets, with sardines finding their way in to the bait cooler less and less. Our reason for this switch is our ability to produce a variety of different baits with just one “base” bait. This can be done in a very short amount of time and eliminates having to worry about keeping baitfish and other items on ice.
Now that we have narrowed down our bait choice, we can now focus on creating several different presentations with very little effort! The night before fishing, we will open up 3-6 cans of OIL PACKED tuna (The number of cans varies with number of people fishing and the amount of different baits desired) and empty them in to usually 3-4 different sealable plastic containers. From there we then decide on the different options that we would like for the following day. One of the containers will always be a plain tuna; day in and day out this produces well. From there we will use fish oil based scents to alter the remaining containers of tuna. Now this does not take a lot of scent! A general guideline that we follow here is roughly 1 tsp. per can of tuna in the container. With the quality of many of the products on the market, it does not take a lot to get the desired result of an altered bait.
As for scent choice, this is where you can revert back to the list of baits that you used to carry with you! Our personal favorite choices are to make a container of sardine or herring, one with krill/anise, and one with garlic if the water is warmer. If you want to be more unique and stand out from a big crowd of boats, then you can begin to mix in more unusual scents such as squid or a combination of several different options. The final decision to make here is which bait oils to choose. In our opinion there are several companies that make a good reliable product, but our personal preference is NW Bait and Scent. The product that they offer is at a consistency that is very conducive to these alterations and has proven to be our best scent thus far for mixing with tuna. The final step is to throw the lid on, shake it up, and throw it in the fridge for the next day. Now all you need to do is wrap it on your Killer-Fish or stuff it in a Super Bait and you’re ready to slay some fish!
